It hasn't been a typical January with no overhead swells. The swells that did come through however were clean westerlies with really good shape; so lots of micro-tubes.

Autumn 2012
Had a fun trip to Morocco start of October but unfortunately cracked a rib surfing a right hand slab after first scoring a few tubes. After a few weeks of healing I was able to compete in the UKPST Scottish Open in Thurso. I was pleased with my result making it into the 3rd Round. I was leading my Quarter final heat against Reubyn Ash when unfortunately the heat was postponed due to a hailstorm and the contest moved to Sandside. Congratulations to Reubyn who went on to win the event.
Mark Boyd - UKPST Scottish Open, Thurso
At the end of October and beginning of November the North Coast really started to light up with a string of epic days at Thurso East, below are a couple of photos courtesy of JC Pinheiro.
Back to work for 6 weeks now :( Hope we get some more of the same in 2013!

March/April 2012
Had a consistent run of surf over March and April, lots of different surfs, a few days of pumping Thurso-East, clean Brimms, beaches...quite a bit of variation. Snow, sun the lot. The Scottish National Surfing Championships took place on the 31st of March and yet again I placed 3rd. I also won the Longboards and won the prize for the highest wave score of the event.

Couple of clips of the waves this month:
filmed by Casey Butler, just gutted she was trying to take photos in one of the clips it missed a decent floater/turn combo
UKPST Scotland
Some really good surf and a couple of contests once back from SA. The UK Pro Surf Tour was up in Scotland from the 3rd to the 7th of October so I gave it a bash as I was given a wildcard and I enjoy a wee comp. I didnt surf very well in my heat at Sandside and my strategy went out the window as soon as I hit the water which I need to work on, gutted I never made it through that round as the following day Thurso East was pumping. Scotland's only other wildcard competitor in the event Yudi Andika got a buy through to the repecharge round as there was a no show in his heat, the following day he surfed really well getting a 6.5 for a turn and tuberide on an inside wave - had he backed up this score he may well have progressed but it wasnt to be this time. My current housemate Aussy Micah Lester won the event so congratulations to him, we had a good wednesday night session on the piss after that one.

The Gathering of the Clans, the Scottish Surfing Federation's biggest contest of the year took place in the Broch on the 8th of October. I was clan cheif for the E.S.P North of Scotland team which included:
Mark Boyd (Thurso)
Micah Lester (Thurso)
Yudi Andika (Golspie)
Robbie Mackay (Banff)
Megan Mackay (Banff)
Andy Bain (Thurso)
Louie Chadwick (Nairn)
Greg Millar (Banff)
The E.S.P team place 2nd overall and had it not been for Louie's injury in the jnr final we may well have won the event as we only lost by 100pts. Next Time!! Yudi won the open, I made it to the final despite not catching a wave which allowed more than one turn in the whole contest and Micah won the seniors. I also got 2nd in the Longboard. Greg and Megan surfed really well and will be ones to watch out for in upcoming years, Bainers made the seniors final and Louie made the juniors final. Robbie put in a great performance in the logs final coming 3rd. It was a great day overall and thank you very much to William Watson and Iain Masson for running the show and the Scottish Surfing Federation for organising the event.

Long journey to get there but well worth it...drove down to Glasgow from Thurso, then flew Dubai and onto Cape Town. Was met at the airport by my good friend Luke who I went to uni with in Aberdeen and who would be my host and tour guide for the next couple of weeks.
Luke and Clare have a sick pad overlooking the beach in Cape Town and the first week the swell was a bit slow, so I just surfed about a few beachies and went out on the town with Luke and Clare.
The second week of my trip the swell boomed; we boosted for J-bay and scored. Really fun waves varying from clean to little bit choppy and in the 2-5ft range over the four days we stayed there. We then returned to Cape Town for one night and up to Elands Baai for the swell right off the back of the last one. We toyed with the idea of hitting that Namibia lefthander everyone is on about, but we would have only had one night there and the flights were expensive and Luke was keen to show me the waves up the desert where he plans to die. Turns out the swell was a bit too big for Elands, we surfed a session there anyway as the swell was growing and it was still a great session. We surfed another point further north in the afternoon and then finished at a secret lefthander in one of the photos below.

July 2011
Been working a lot over July but made it home for one week only. Thankfully got some summer swell in which to try out my new 6'0 HBS by Guts Surfboards, a great summer grovel board. Two days of Thurso-East at the begginning so can't complain considering it is summer and a few more days at beachbreaks Strathy and Sinclairs, then just before I had to head back to work had two fun surfs on an East Coast swell near Aberdeen. If you are interested in an HBS to make the most of summer waves check out http://www.gutssurfboards.com/ and mention my name.

Went to France end of May. Got some fun waves around Hossegor and unfortunately the ColdPro in Ireland was cancelled so I decided to get a new flight and stay down there for a bit. Drove down to the Basque Country for a swell and scored Mundaka - a few fun days and one epic morning which was worth getting up really early to get a few really good tubes. Came back up to Hossegor for the end of my trip and seen the Swatch Girls Pro which was very inspiring - the standard of some of the surfing was unbelievable - particularly Courtney and Sally on their backhand. Back to work now, but its not all bad, done some whisky tasting in Islay, Scotland during this job and even checked out a few surf spots but never got a surf despite having the board with me.

O'Neill CWC Scotland
This was how the heats turned out. Mark Boyd (SCO) in heat 1 and Chris Noble (SCO) in heat 17. Unfortunately this year both of us failed to progress through to the next round but it was good fun again competing against some of the best surfers in the world and learning a bit from the experience. I was absolutely astounded by the paddle fitness of these guys and their ability to hassle every wave off you - im sure Chris will agree that this fitness is much more noticable on a longer wave like thurso-east than it was at previous years at the bowl, and I thought I was pretty paddle fit after all the surfing I have been doing on the lead up to the comp. The one set wave I did manage to get on I scored a 3.8, but Dion Atkinson the heat leader at the time wasn't going to give it to me easily - he paddled me much deeper than I would normally be comfortable taking off and due to the paddle battle that I had just encountered I was still trying to get my breath back during my bottom turn. Much more heat strategy than I had anticipated and getting the waves in a 4 man heat seems to be just as important, if not more important, than surfing them - watch oot at the Scottish next year boys!
Check out some footage of the surfing at thurso-east:
